The snap of a master switch this evening will flood the extensive Karangahape Road shopping area with brilliantlywhite soft lighting from over 600 powerful electric lamps. This will mark tne fulfilment of shop owners' long-cherished, hopes and the opening of the Karangahape Road community lighting scheme, which will be the largest and most modern in New Zealand. It will transform this famous shopping centre into a beautifully-illuminated promenade. It will be known as the " Great White Way " of Auckland. The lamps, placed in front of nearly every shop, will be of 100 candle power, and extend well over a mile from near' the Great North Road along to Symonds Street, on each'side of the street. The reticulation will also include about 100 yards each of the Great North Road and Ponsonby Road. Of very distinctive design, the lamps are of porcelain, ten inches in diameter, and are designed to give the maximum brilliancy. They will be placed ten feet apart. The opening of the scheme this evening will be a triumph for the industry, enthusiasm and determination of the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society, which has been in existence for 20 years, during which it has been largejy responsible for the steady progress and development of the area. A multiplicity of difficulties has been surmounted since the beginning of the project two years ago. Excellent cooperation among all retailers, even from those with their own lighting systems, has been a material factor, while much is owed to the enterprise of the Auckland Electric-power Board. The community lighting scheme, which with such unbounded success in other parts of Auckland and the Dominion, will undoubtedly raise Karangahape Road to even greater heights of popularity as one of the premier shopping areas in the Dominion. The business people anticipate that it will become a very animated street at night, during which the many beautiful window displays will receive studied attention. The Karangahape Road shopping district, which attracts thousands of shoppers from all parts of Auckland City and province, and the gateway to the thickly-populated suburbs of Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Heme Bay, Newton, Point Chevalier, New Lynn, Dominion Road and Kingsland, has undergone a vast transformation in its short history.
