LIBRARY BLOCK

NEWMARKET PROPOSAL SWIMMING BATHS PLAN SCHEMES BEFORE COUNCIL Two mnjor building schemes were approved in principle by the Newmarket Borough Council at its meeting last night. The proposals, which have been under discussion for more than three months, are for the construction of a new library and women's rest room and also for a swimming bath of the full Olympic size. After consideration in committee, the decisions were approved in open meeting and a committee, consisting of the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, and Messrs. C. G. Bhodes, B. E. Newport and H. McKail Geddes, was appointed to bring down a report. Two main plans were discussed for the library building and no details aro available, except tjint so far the proposal is that the building should be mainly devoted to the library and rest room. It is possible, however, that the council may incorporate in the block its administrative offices and there may bo provision for a car parking area. The site is triangular in shape and is at the intersection of Khyber Pass Boad and Broadway. A more complete idea could be gained of the swimming baths, which will bo situated in part of the same reserve adjoining Victoria Crescent and Manukau lioud 011 the city side of the railway. The town clerk, Mr. H. Wilson, said the whole scheme would fulfil the ideal of a recreational centre. The baths will bo of Olympic standard design and will be 165 ft. bv 50ft., with provision for underwater lighting. The pool will bo tiled and there will be seating accommodation at one side for 1500 spectators. At the other side opposite to the railway there will be room for tAVO tennis courts, or, alternatively, a children's playing area, and this could bo converted without difficulty to provide seating on temporary staging for a further 2500 people. A filtration and purification system is to be installed and the water will be tepid. Financial and other considerations have vet to be settled, but ii is intended to go on with the schemes without delay.
