PACIFIC DEFENCE

AMERICAN BASE HAWAII BEING CONSIDERED REMOVAL FROM PHILIPPINES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received March 7, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 6 The Washington correspondent of the United Press Association states that the Government is considering withdrawing the Philippine defence line to Hawaii after the Philippines assume independence in 1946. Some strategists say that if there were war in the Pacific the necessity for holding the Philippines would require so great a naval concentration that the main land would be left vulnerable. Naval circles say that if the United States intends to stay in the Orient the Government must establish adequate overhaul facilities and other necessities for defence.
