PARKING CHARGE
MISSION BAY DOMAIN MOVE FOR ABOLITION REJECTION BY CITY COUNCIL A recommendation by the Parks Committee to abolish the charge for parking in the Selwyn Domain, Mission Bay, was rejected by the City Council last night. . The secretary of the Automobile Association (Auckland), in a letter, said that from reports received the decision of the council to impose a parking fee at Mission Bay had contributed toward congestion on the road. It was origin* ally understood, he said, that the purpose of the fee was to provide attendants and control over parking on the reserves, so that nobody would take an unreasonable amount of room, and the reserve would be maintained in good order. It was now reported that no service of this sort was rendered and that the attendant collecting the fee took no steps to regulate parking or improve parking conditions. In view of this, the association respectfully suggested that the parking fee should be discontinued. It was believed that this was the wish, not only of motorists, but of city residents generally. The town clerk, Mr. J. Melhng, reported that a further letter from the association, requesting that a deputation should be allowed to wait on the Legal and By-laws Committee to discuss the proposed by-law prohibiting parking on the waterfront road at Mission Bay had been placed before the committee. It was agreed to hear representatives. The Parks Committee recommended that its previous decision should be adhered to. that, having due regard to all the facts, it was of the opinion that the charge made for parking on the domain should be abolished. This section of the report was not adopted.
ANOTHER AREA PROHIBITED
SPACE AT ST HELIERS BAY A decision to prohibit parking of motor-cars on part of the greensward at the end of St. Heliers Bay, on' what is actually a portion of_ the Marine Parade and Cliff Road, was reached by the City Council last night. The decision followed a visit by the Parks Committee. The council decided that a fence should be erected on the western side of the steps leading to the beach and that vehicles should be prohibited from parking on the grassed area to the west of the fence. It was also decided to remove the footpath crossing at the western end of the area.
