LEAGUE OF NATIONS

SUPPORT FOR COVENANT // REQUEST' TO GOVERNMENT Concerned at the unsettled international situation, the executive of the Auckland branch of the League of Nations Union has passed a resolution •urging the Government to reaffirm its support of the Covenant of the League, and the principle of collective security. The executive asked the Government to express its opposition to any agreement between members of the British Commonwealth of Nations and any foreign Powers which is not consistent with such support, and in particular to express its disapproval of any agreement with ; Italy which is not conditional upon the withdrawal of Italian "troops from Spain, or which involves the recognition of the Italian conquest of Abyssinia. The resolution was passed because tjhe executive was convinced that any alleviation of the troubled situation j'which condoned acts or aggression or armed intervention could only be " ■temporary, and could not fail to sow the seeds of future discord.
