AMERICAN RADIO SETS
PRIVATE IMPORTS EFFECT OF TARIFF INCREASES Fully 50 per cent of American radio sets that come to New Zealand are stated to bo imported by private individuals, so that the rise in tariffs, which is expected to limit fairly severely a volume of trade that is of fair dimensions, strikes at a feature that is not relished by traders. A 35 per cent duty on radio chassis not mounted in cabinets has been increased to 50 per cent, but when tho added proportion of sales tax and surtax is taken into consideration the rise represents 21 \ per cent, and not tho margin of 15 per cent between the tariffs. The gross duty is now 79i per cent. On radios mounted in cabinets the tariff has been increased from 45 to 65 per cent, tho gross duty now being 101 per cent, representing :an actual rise of 28J per cent.
