S. T. Matthews, who for some time was associated with J. T. Paul, of Mangers, and latterly with F. J. Smith, at Takanini, has set up as a trainer at Otahuhu, where ho has Atarau King and two unraced trotters under his care. Atarau King won on the West Coast of the South Island and since coining North ho has secured three minor placings. He has plenty of speed, but his staying powers require development. A three-year roan filly by Jewel Pointer —Miss Joan Direct and a mare by Frank Worthy from Lady Stepney are the other members of the team. A. W. Broughton lias some additions to his team at Mangere, including Juju McElwyn, Marcus and Onr War. Our War appears to have the Man O'War fondness of soft tracks. Before leaving Epsom Juju McElwyn showed signs of the form that removed her from the novice ranks in the South Island. In spite of his attractiveness in training, Marcus has failed to make good as a racing proposition. Until he loses his barrier shyness he will find it difficult to win. Broughton's other charge, John's Last, who showed a flash of form when he ran second to Verihane in December, failed at the last meeting after having chance.
