THE WEINTRAUBS

GIFTED MUSICIANS A SUCCESSFUL CONCERT The popularity of the Wcintraubs was well evidenced at His Majesty's Theatre last night by the large audience which attended the second Auckland concert of this talented band of musicians. Variety was the keynote of the programme, which ranged from uproarious comedy to appealing musical numbers. Of outstanding interest were variations 011 the tune "Trees," in the style of several classical numbers. The Strauss and Liszt arrangements were particularly entertaining. Mozart's "Carnival of Venice" also provided a number of] amusing variations, the Weintraubs appearing one moment as an Arab band and within a few seconds as a typical farming community. Other items which aroused the enthusiasm of the house Avere a medley of famous Viennese songs, a symphonic arrangement of "Make a Wish, ' and the swing foxtrot "Blow Your Hern." A serious note was supplied by a Russian Cossack song, "Polluschka," while a truly Parisian atmosphere was provided by a French number, "Annabels." Much of the humour of the programme was derived from clever lighting effects and novel musical variations. The most amusing sequence was one in which the spotlight was focussed on the wrong player during a series of solos, the saxophone being heard while the piccolo was apparently playing, and the efforts of the violinist producing the unmistakable notes of a trumpet. The associate artists were the Australian tenor Edward M. Smith, who sang several Irish numbers and "La Donna e Mobile," and Cushla Ddange, whose two solos were greatly appreciated.
