IRISH LEADER
I LETTER FROM MR. DE VALERA A personal message of congratulation to New Zealand Catholics on the celebration of their Centenary was read by Bishop Liston at last night's gathering at the Town Hall from Mr. de Valera on behalf of the Government and people of Ireland. His Lordship said the letter would be kept in the church's archives and would, he hoped, be reproduced a century hence. Mr. de Valera said Irishmen recalled with satisfaction that, if the first missionary priests were sons of France, they came in response to the urgent appeal of pioneer Irish settlers, and their first church was an Irishman's home. Mr. de Valera referred to the Irish influence in the clergy and laity of the Church in Xew Zealand and said there was deep pride in the 100 years of progress now being celebrated. "On behalf of the Government and people of Ireland. I offer, through Your Lordship, most cordial congratulations to Xew Zealand's catholic communitv, hoping that the years to come will bring even greater success," he added.
