THE NEW MACHINES DELAY UNTIL NEXT YEAR NO SERVICE IN MEANTIME By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright MELBOUENE, Feb. 24 Following statements by New Zealand commercial pilots that there is no possibility of a transtasman fly'ing-boat service' within two years, Mr. H. Y. Thorby, Minister of Defence, admitted that the new boats that were being designed for the service might not be ready before 1939. Thei'e would be no services until these were ready. There was no possibility, the Minister said, of the Commonwealth Government co-opcrating with New Zealand to establish a temporary service with the use of land machines. LONG SURVEY ENDED RETURN OF CENTAURUS FAST TIME ON LAST STAGE British Wireless KUGBY. Feb. 23 Tlie flying-boat Centaurus reached Southampton several hours earlier than she was expected on her return from New Zealand. Since the flying-boat left Southampton on December 3, it has flown 30,000 miles in a survey of a route for a regular flying-boat service between Southampton and Sydney, which is to start early this summer, and for an extended air-mail route from Sydney to Auckland, which is expected to be established a year later. CHEAP AIR MAIL RATES NEW SERVICE STARTED LONDON, Feb. 23 To inaugurate the 3jd air mail from India to Malaya, the Imperial Airways flying-boat Centurion left Southampton to-day with five tons of mail. It is intended to fly four mails a week from England, with two continuing to Singapore, pending the opening of the service between England and Australia.
