PREMATURE EXPLOSION
HOMER TUNNEL MISHAP TWO MEN SLIGHTLY HURT KNOCKED OVER BY BLAST [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL, Thursday Two men employed by the Public Works Department at the Homer Tunnel, Hollyford, have been admitted to the Southland Hospital suffering from facia} injuries received during blasting operations outside the tunnel yesterday morning. They are Mr. Edward Rask, a single man, aged 33, of 135 Spey Street, Invercargill, and a married man, also of Invercargill. l\lr. Rask and his companion were engaged at tho foot of the hill outside tho tunnel plugging a hole with gelignite in preparation for blasting rock. One of them was tamping the plug when the gelignite suddenly exploded in the faces of the men and knocked them over. The assistance of others working near by was available and as soon as the injured men had been given first aid they were brought to the Southland Hospital in the camp ambulance. No damage was caused to the tujtinel and the injuries to tho men, although painful, are superficial. One suffered a cut over an eye, and both have facial abrasions.
