WAR FEARS IN EUROPE 'I ill though a major war did not even- y) tuate for 26 years, grave anxiety for pea,ce in Europe was a feature of the r news half a century ago, as can be seen from the following extract from the New Zealand Herald of February 23, 1888; V* "The business of preparing for war nf. goes on apace in Europe, and although «• the prophets have been long prophesy- to ing and their anticipations of imme- n diate outbreaks have been persistently disappointed, there can be little doubt that sooner or later relief to the present unbearable tension will come in an outbreak of hostilities. The extent to which the expectation of a general war has gone is shown in the fact that Spain, Belgium and Holland are reported to have joined the Triple Alliance.
