VALUELESS CHEQUE
COUNSEL'S NAMED USED ACCUSED JUST OUT OF PRISON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCfItJKCH, Tuesday "I have just found out that my name was signed to this cheque," said Mr. D. J. Hewitt, counsel for Abraham Luke Adams, aged 27, who admitted in. the Magistrate's Court this morning that he had attempted to obtain goods and money by means of a valueless cheque. Detective-Sergeant Bickerdike said that, after filling in the blank cheque, Adams attempted to cash it at a grocer's shop, but the proprietor was suspicious and asked him to cash it elsewhere. Later he admitted it was valueless and tore it up. Mr. Hewitt said Adams only came out of prison on Monday, for a breach of the Bankruptcy Act, and intended to behave himself. Another gaol-bird gave him a blank cheque, a.nd after carrying it for two days ho yielded to temptation when he had a few drinks and filled it in, using counsel's name. Adams was ordered to come up for sentenco in two years if called on.
