FRENCH PRIEST'S CAREER

SOLDIER AND AVIATOR CHAPLAIN ON TRAINING SHIP Soldier and aviator of France for many years, but now a member of the Catholic priesthood, tho ltev. Father Pierra, chaplain of tho French training cruiser Jeanne d'Arc, now at Wellington and soon to visit Auckland, is ono of the most interesting figures of the ship's largo company. Father Pierra was for 20 years a member of the French Army Flying Corps, and was, in fact, one of the pioneer aviators of his country. When tho war broke out ho held the rank of colonel, and served successively on tho statfs of Marshal Joffre and Mnrshal Foch.

It was during the war years that the call, to the priesthood came and, as soon as Father Pierra could, lie resigned from the army and entered a seminary to study for tho priesthood. Ho was ordained in 1931. Knowing the religious needs of the forces through so many years of active service, he sawin a chaplain's life plenty of scope for priestly ministrations. The Jeanne d'Arc will arrivo at Auckland next Monday, her visit coinciding with the Catholic centenary celebrations.
