SAMOAN CLIPPER

AUCKLAND MEMOBIAL TROPHY TO BE AWARDED EMPIRE AND UNITED STATES CONTRIBUTIONS TO SAFE FLYING The form of a memorial to Captain Edwin Musick and his six companions in the Samoan' Clipper, who perished in the disaster last month, was provisionally arranged at a meeting of a special committee, held at the Town Hall yesterday. The committee, comprising the j Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, the Hon. T. Bloodworth, M.L.C., and the New Zealand representative of Pan American Airways, Mr. Harold Gatty, was elected to administer a fund inaugurated by the New Zealand Herald and subscribed to by citizens, business firms and local authorities in Auckland. The fund amounts to £550, including a donation of £250 from the Auckland Harbour Board. The committee decided to call the memorial the Musick Memorial Trophy, and a provisional agreement was reached regarding the conditions under which the trophy will be awarded. A meeting will be held next month to confirm these conditions, and also to invite designs for the trophy. It was proposed to award the trophy, for annual presentation to individuals, groups, or bodies within the British Empire and the United States of America, who make what, during the year, is the most valuable contribution toward the safety of life in the air, and the most efficient working of aircraft, with especial regard to transoceanic flying. The award will be made by a special representative Auckland committee, after considering recommendations from the Royal Aeronautical Society of Great Britain and the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences of the United States of America. The Auckland committee will comprise those for the time being holding office as Mayor of Auckland, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the University College, and the senior stipendiary magistrate. It is proposed to seek designs for the trophy from all over the world, the order to be placed through an Auckland firm.
