SHIP NEARLY MISSED
SEAMAN HAULED ON BOARD LORD NUFFIELD STANDS BY • Reaching the ship's side as the transtasuian liner Awatea was beginning to move away from Queen's Wharf yesterday afternoon on the voyage to Sydney, a member of her crew speiiit several exciting moments in getting on board. The passenger entrance was about eight feet above wharf level so the seaman made a hasty plunge in a fruitless attempt to force his way through a porthole. This proving unsuccessful he called for a rope, and after trying, to climb up th.e ship's side with its support, he looped the end around a foot and was hauled on board.
Viscount Nuffield, who was returning to Sydney after a brief visit to Auckland, was standing at the entrance with ship's officers waving to the visitors on the wharf, and waited to assist tliie seaman in ca-o of accident.
