NEW CARGO VESSEL
TASMAN TIMBER TRADE RIPLACJNG WRECKED SHIP CONSTRUCTION IN SCOTLAND To replace the steamer Abel Tasman, which was wrecked at the Grey River Bar in July, 1936, the Melbourne firm of H. C. Sleigh Coasters Proprietary, Limited, has ordered a larger vessel to be constructed in Scotland. The new steamer, of 3500 tons deadweight, will be built by the Burntisland Shipbuilding Company, of East Fife.
For use in the intercolonial timber trade, the vessel will have exception;ally large hatches and heavy cargo gear to enable her to carry logs 90ft! in length. She will be 284 ft. long, with a speed of about 11 knots.
Since the wreck of the Abel Tasman the company's service to New Zealand has been maintained by the James Cook. The Abel Tasman was built in Holland in 1916 as the Mont Blanc, and when taken over by H. C. Sleigh in 1933 she bore the name of Nord, under Norwegian registry. She was of 2042 tons gross.
