CIRCUS STRANDED
INCIDENT IN FLOOD ELEPHANT SAVES CARAVAN A sorry procession straggled into Warkworth late on Saturday night. It consisted oi: a circus caravan, which for hours had struggled to get thrpugh floodwaters near Wainui after a sudden rise of the water had threatened to drown maty of the animals. The caravan left Helensville early on Saturday morning for Warkworth, and, when it came to a section of the * oa that was under water near Wainui, i was decided to proceed. The waters rose swiftly when the whole train 0 waggons was in the centre the flo°de portion and nothing the attendants di could drag them to safety. Monkeys» lions and tigers were in danger of being overwhelmed, for the water had risen above the bottoms of the cages. A As a last resource the elephant was called upon and after gig&n w struggles it nmnaged to drag the van to the iirm ground. When the - circus finally straggled into Warkw the elephant was covered from « to foot in thick clay. .
