EMPIRE FLYING-BOAT MACHINE LOSES FLOAT ESCAPE OF PASSENGERS HARBOUR AT BRINDISI By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received February 7, 12.20 a.m.) BRINDISI. Feb. 6 The Imperial Airways flying-boat Calpurnia, bound for Africa from London with nine passengers, lost a float when taking off at Brindisi and consequently the passengers have been delayed until the arrival of another machine from London to-morrow.
The passengers were lucky to escape when the Calpurnia "pancaked." The machine arrived last night with nine passengers and a heavy load of mail and freight. The .passengers re-embarked at 6.45 a.m. to-day. The machine taxied along the waters of the harbour to face the strong southwesterly wind and then rose, but fell to the surface, the huge left float being torn away.
Imperial Airways' launch dashed up and took oft' the passengers.
An Italian air pilot said: "I was standing on the quayside when the pilot gave full throttle to his four engines. The machine appeared to rise prematurely from the choppy water and came down again. The float was carried off in an instant. The Imperial Airways launch was cruising around as usual and dashed up.'"
