SEIZURE BY JAPAN VITAL QUESTION RAISED FOREIGNERS' INTERESTS By Telegraph— Prows Association —Copyright (Received February -1, 6.45 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. -1 The Shanghai correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says the Japanese may seize Chinese property worth millions of pounds if a decision announced by the spokesman of the Japanese Embassy is put into full effect. The spokesman disclosed the seizure of the residence of General Wu Teh-chen, Governor of Shantung and formerly Mayor of Shanghai. Tlio Japanese authorities intended to seize the property of all Chinese engaged in anti-Japanese activities regardloss of its location. The question whether the property of taxpayers' within the International Settlement should he protected instantly arises, says the correspondent. The decision is believed to he connected with Japan's determination to secure reparations from China by all possible means.
SHANGHAI TERRORISTS ACTIVITIES CONTINUE 80MB CAUSES DAMAGE AMERICAN PRESS OFFICE (Received February 4, 0.45 p.m.) SHANGHAI, Feb. 4 Terrorist activities in Shanghai continue. A bomb was thrown at the offices of the United Press, American news agency. It exploded and tore a large hole in the wall and wrecked the furniture. The offices were empty at the time. CHINESE CUSTOMS DEADLOCK REPORTED (Received February 4, 5.5 p.in.) TOKIO, Feb. 3 The Foreign Minister, Mr. Hirota, in the Diet to-day stated that there was a complete deadlock in the Customs negotiations with Shanghai Japan had no intention of taking over the Customs, although the revenue was being deposited in the Yokohama specie bank.
RUSSIAN RAILWAY LINK (Received February 4, 5.5 p.m.) MOSCOW, Feb. 3 Work has begun on a 200 mile railway line from the main line skirting Baikal to Kvakhta and the Outer Mongolian Frontier. The line, which will be completed before the end of the year, will connect with the Peking Road. SMALLPOX AT HONGKONG HONGKONG, Feb. 3 There has been a disquieting increase in smallpox at Hongkong with 120 fresh cases for the week ending January 29, and 56 in the last 24 hours.
