MINERS' HEROISM
HOLDITCH RESCUE TEAM FRENCH INTERNATIONAL AWARD (Received February 8, (i.O p.m.) British Wireleas ' RUGBY, Feb. 'i In recognition of their heroic work during the disaster at the Holditcli colliery in July, when 30 men lost their lives, the Holditch rescue team has been honoured by an international award from the President of the French Republic, M. Lebrun, of the Grand Prix International for courajze and devotion.
On July 2 fire caused an explosion in the working face of the Holditch Main colliery, Chesterton, North Staffordshire. There were 200 workers underground when a sheet of flame from the neighbourhood- of coal-cutting machinery caused a stampede, and a second explosion occurred three hours after the first whilo the rescue work was in full swing. Although flames seriously hampered the work, ten rescue teams worked until nightfall.
