STOCK SALES

WESTFIELD SHEEP FAIR SMALL YARDING IN DEMAND PRICES REMAIN FIRM Indications were forthcoming at the Westfield annual sheep and ram fair yesterday that the demand for sheep, botli by graziers and by farmers running mixed stock on their lands, is still firm and substantial. The factors indicating this trend was the smaller offering of sheep, the comparative scarcity of young sheep in the pens and the keen bidding and firm values, espcially for aged ewes. The yarding failed to reach last year's figures and less than 10,000 head were forward. Old ewes, chiefly culls from large mobs, sold at very good prices, which generally were satisfactory to the vendors. Lambs were also less numerous, the top price being 19s for forward condition woolly lambs. Store wethers realised up to 25s and two-tooth ewes to 37s Cd. A line of Rornney rams offered on behalf of Mr. D. G. Forlong, of Uunnythorpe, sold up to Bgns., and Southdown rams were sold on account of Mr. A C. Trousdale, of Howick, jind Mr. J. R. Self, of Papatoetoe, at prices reaching 7Jgns., The quotations were:— Shcop.—Two-tooth Southdown-cross ewes, to 355; four-year-old ewes, to 25s Od; five-year-old ewes, from 38s Gd to '2os Od; five-six-year-old ewes, to 23s Od; full-mouth ewes, 15s to 17s Od; aged and inferior ewes, front 7s Od to 12s; store wethers, to 255; two-tooth Komney ewes, to 37s fid; crossbred ewes, to 20s. BETTER- RAM PRICES COMPETITION AT HAMILTON [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday An improvement in the average prices realised was seen at the annual Hamilton ram fair, which opened at the Claudelands Showgrounds to-day. There was a large bench of buyers, from all parts of the Waikato. The market for the first offering of Southdown was quiet, several lots being passed, but in the afternoon the prices had become much firmer, the best one-shear rams consistently reaching 7gns. The top price for the sale was 10%gns, and it is estimated that the average price obtained was at least one guinea firmer for all classes. RAMS BRING TO 75GNS. . ANNUAL FAIR AT FEILDING [by telegraph—press association] FEILDING, Thursday There was a crowded' attendance, representative of both the North and South Islands, at the first day of the annual ram fair at Feilding to-day, when about 1350 flock \and 30 stud Romneys were offered. The market was slow at first and although firming luter remained unsteady all through. Nevertheless, the sale was one of the best yet held at Feilding for good sheep, which averaged well above recent years. The top price for stud rams was 75gns, with others from 40 to Ttlgns, the average price being 37y a gns. Rams exhibited in the flock classes at the Feilding: show sold extremely well, the top prices being 40gns, against 20gns last year. The heavy percentage of indifferent quality rams in the general flock offering brought the average price well down, although individual breeders with well-known flocks enjoyed a greatly improved sale. The top price for a flock ram in this section was 23gns. Fully So per cent of the offering was cleared at auction. 20,000 SHEEP YARDED OPOTIKI ANNUAL FAIR [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Thursday The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company.
