COMMENT ON FORM

BRYCE STREET, SCORES VICTORY FOR ROYAL VAALS GOOD EFFORT BY ROLLICKER The place favourite Bryce Street stayed on well at the finish to defeat the win favourite Sandrift in the Orewa Hurdles. Bryce Street lost a little ground when he jumped the fence near the seven-furlong post awkwardly, but soon ran into a good position again. With live furlongs to go. In Command, Bryce Street and Sandrift had the field beaten, and they drew away together approaching the second to last, fence, where In Command fell heavily when going well and about a neck in front. Jt looked as if In Command would have been very difficult to beat, but when he toppled over the issue was left to Bryce Street and Sandrift. Bryce Street, who is a good jumper in the making, proved the better stayer and was drawing right away at the finish. The form of the others was not impressive. A Nice Performance Tho three-year-old Royal Vaals was made an each-way favourite for the Trial Stakes and she registered a nice performance to win with top-weight from No. 1(3 at tho barrier. Windcress, who drew No. 15, and Royal Vaals went very fast to take the lead in tho first furlong, and from then on they were always close together, Royal Vaals proving the better over the last furlong to win narrowly. Royal- Vaals is oil the improve and thoroughly deserved her success. Windcress is also on the upgrade and registered his best performance, paying a good price for a place. Inquisitor, who drew well out, and was forced to go on the outside, ran his best race and also paid a good place dividend. Lady Defoe began smartly from No. 2, but was soon cut off, and went well back. She ran on strongly on the outside for fourth, although a couple of lengths behind Lady Inquisitor at the post.

Another each-way favourite was successful when the three-year-old Aero King scored in tho Ferry Handicap. It was an exciting contest over the last furlong and Aero King, showing plenty of determination, did just too well for Bronzette and Glen Abb, who was on the outside. Tho winner was always well placed and scored a popular win for Mr. C. M. Emanuel, who has not had the best of luck for some time past. Bronzette fought on splendidly after following Miss Te Koura until reaching the straight. Bronzette and Chief Lap, who finished fourth, began from the outside post positions. Glen Abb ran his best race for some time and just failed after making a good effort on the outside. Fleetwind made a very creditable showing and she may soon do better, as it was only her second start this season. Miss To Koura displayed her usual speed, but failed to run on. Outsider Triumphs

Outsider but one of the field oi twelve on both totalisators, Day Wind brought off <a surprise in winning the Takapuna Cup, paying over a score for a win and a good dividend also for a place. Day Wind was in the lead early and then gave way to Inver and Royal Appellant. Day Wind was in front again with half a mile to go and held on gallantly in an exciting finish to just win from King Rev, who appeared a trifle unlucky. Day Wind was much improved for his racing at Thames, where he failed, and was capably handled by the apprentice G. Gilchrist, who is steadily increasing his tally of wins. Royal Appellant was always well placed and fought on in fine style to be a very cose third. Knight of Australia ran on solidly to be a close fourth, River. Grateful, Gay Rose, Dark Shadow, and Jonathan all ran well to be very close to the placed horses, Grateful being checked near the end. Jonathan made up ground in the straight after being in the rear most of the way and may improve. Dark Shadow made a fast run from the rear between the five furlongs and tho turn and hung on well considering. The second fancy Calorie narrowly defeated the each-way favourite Hot Box in the Calliope Handicap. Calorie, who drew No. 4, reached the front quicklv with Veritable and just hung on to' beat Hot Box, who made a gallant effort on the rails. Hot Box drew No. 14 in the field of 17 and went fast on the outside early to gain a position. The honours of the race were clearly with him and there is no doubt that iie is very useful. Calorie recorded her best performance to date but she was stopping quickly at the end. Sir Robin ran on creditably for third and Valimeen came from a good way back to secure fourth. Silver Quex and Silver Cloud did best of the others. Milanion displayed speed and he may improve with racing. Royal Ace ran right to the outside of the course at the turn and was pulled up. Anion Runs Unplaced

Patiently ridden by. H. N. Wiggins, who saved him lor a .short final burst, Surolla just defeated Torch in the Wvnyartl Plate, in which the favourite Anion was unplaced. Torch made n great effort to win practically all the way but Surella. was just too good at the end. The winner was turned out in splendid condition by 11. S. Bagby and registered one of his best performances. Play On was closer in third position at the finish than at any other stage. Ivy Willonyx was in the rear most of" the journey and finished strongly to gain fourth. High Sea battled on for fifth but Du Maurier weakened after looking likely at the turn. Romani also tired near the end after being right up at the distance. The second fancy Suleiman prevailed by a head in the Zealandia Handicap, just defeating llollicker, who made a great attempt to lead over the hist live furlongs. Hollickcr, who drew tlu; extreme outside of the field of 11. went very fast early and might ha-ve succeeded only for bor.ng out a little near the «nd. It was .only in the last couple of strides that he was headed by Suleiman, who secured a fine run through on the rails. The winner began very smartly and was always well placed. His rider, 0. G. Goulsbro, was not too well after pulling up and was probably feeling the effects of wasting. Tosh was handily placed throughout and. fought on well for third, paying a good place dividend. Pereatu failed to run on after being prominent to the turn, but Tray Bit and Trilliarcli were running on. Trilliarcli may improve. Strctto was handy all the way but failed to make any impression in the straight. Marie's Acre was never dangerous. Favourite Defeated

The win favourite Mclvanui was responsible for most of the running in the llangit.oto Handicap but he was outstayed in the run home by Prince Rangi and Malagigi. Prince Ilangi moved lip oil the rails at the home turn to be fifth into the straight and once in line came home strongly on the outside. Melvanui weakened quickly in the last little bit and Malagigi, after being last most of the way, finished resolutely to deprive him of second. Droll was closer in fourth position at the finish than at any other stage and Poker Face shaped creditably for fifth. The place favourite Privy Seal appeared to be going well when she received a check at the turn, but she made little impression in the run home. She returned to scale bleeding from the coronet of the oif hind leg. Malagigi is a likely improver. His finishing effort was pleasing.
