WYNYARD PLATE TO SURELLA

A feature of the opening of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday was the surprise victory of Day Wind in the Takapuna Cup, in which he narrowly defeated King Rey and Royal Appellant. The three-year-old Suleiman, who has made rapid progress since making a successful debut in October, just beat Rollicker in the Zealandia Handicap, scoring his fifth victory in eight starts. The Wynyard Plate was won by the fourth fancy Surella, who finished strongly to beat Torch. The only each-way favourites to win were Royal Vaals in the Trial Stakes Handicap and Aero King in the Ferry Handicap. Bryce Street, winner of the Orewa Hurdles, was favourite in the place betting and second fancy on the win machine.
