YACHT DAMAGED
STRUCK AT MOOEINGS MISFORTUNE OF TAMATEA PLANKING CUT THROUGH Although the regatta on Saturday was remarkably free from mishaps, misfortune overtook the A class kceler Tam a tea at her moorings at Mechanics' Day at about four o'clock in the afternoon, when she was struck amidships by the C class kceler Dorothy. There were five men aboard the 1 amatea, which is owned b}' Messrs. N. H. Newcombc and J. H. Newcombe, and one of them was thrown overboard as a result of the impact, but nobody was injured. The Tamatea had taken part in the race for the Heather Cup, and when the collision occurred was moored with sails down. The main stringer and about four planks in the hull were cut through. It is also feared that two ribs will need repairs. The skylight was lifted right off the cabin by the bowsprit of the Dorothy. _____ While the full extent of the damage has not been ascertained, the visible structural damage indicates that repairs w'll take a fortnight. An endeavour will be made, however, to have the craft ready for the regatta at Kawau.
Several novel features were included in the construction of the Tamatea. which was built for its owners by Mi. A. Couldrey, of Northcote, for last season. Her principal dimensions arc: — Length overall, 48ft.; waterline length. 29ft.; beam, 81't. 4in. (extreme); draught, 71t. She has a single skin built of J in. planking on bent frames, spaced Sin. centres, and diagonal steel strapping to the hull and back. With her long spoon bow and counter stern she presents a very graceful appearance.
