FATAL FALL OF ROCK
HO AD WORKER KILLED COMPANION SEVERELY HURT PREPARING FOR BLASTING [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday Ono man was killed and another extensively injured to-day when a face of rock was being prepared for blasting at Hayward's Hill, Hutt Valley, Wellington. The victims were:—
Mr. Ernest William Tucker, aged 27, married, with one child, of Wainuiomata; killed. Mr. J. Lamb, Mandalay Terrace, Khandallah; lacerated wounds to the face, arms, hands and legs, and injuries to the back and chest.
Mr. Lamb was taken to the Wellington Hospital by ambulance. At a late hour to-night his condition was reported to be not serious;. The accident occurred at 11.20 a.m., when a section of the hill face was being prepared for blasting and the rock fell before the charge exploded. The work on the road is being done by the Public Works Department and is part of a scheme to widen the road from the Hutt Valley to Fahautanui. Mr. Tucker's body was covered by the fragments and more than an hour was spent in moving the debris before he could be exTricated.
