TORTURE ALLEGED
ACTION OF POLICEMIAN I OCCURRENCE AT LAHORE (Received January 25, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 25 The Labour member of the House of Commons for Ley ton West, the Rev. R. Sorenson, intends to raise va the House the question of a secret inquiry being conducted at Lahore into the acquittal by the High Court of a nightwatchman named Kiroo for the murder of a policeman who was alleged to have tortured him for six hours in order to extort/ a confession. v • The alleged torture occurred under the eyes of children in the married quarters at the barracks. A pipe-major of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders protested to his superior officers
Kiroo then seized the weapon with which he was being beaten and killed his tormentor. He was sentenced to transportation for life, but later was acquitted, the Chief Justice, Sir Douglas Young, declaring that Kiroo was justified. He added that he was satisfied that torture, which was a disgrace to the police force, was practised.
