SURF LIFE-SAVING

DOMINION TITLES EVENTS AT NEW BRIGHTON NELSON SHIELD TO ST. CLAIR [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday The New Zealand surf championships were concluded at New Brighton yesterday in miserable weather. Teams from 10 clubs competed and the honours were very evenly distributed. North Island teams were at an advantage in the light surf. The Canterbury teams, which are more accustomed to heavy surf, were handicapped in the straight swimming. The principal event, the Nelson Shield competition for rescue and resuscitation, was won by St. Clair, Dunedin. New Brigthon A had a substantial lead OTi time but lost it on resuscitation. The beltman's championship was keenly contested by J. C. Blakeley and A. T. Palton (North Beach). Dalton, who has held the title for the last two years, broke away to a lead of five yards on the run in to the water, but Blakeley, sprinting fast over the final stages, overtook him and touched the buoy with 3-5s to spare.
