UMPIRES' ASSOCIATION

DOMINION BODY FORMED QUESTION OF FOOT-FAULTING The Auckland Lawn Tennis Umpires' Association has decided to affiliate with the New Zealand Association, whose headquarters are in Wellington. Mr. R. D. Syme, president of the Wellington Association, paid a visit to Auckland last week to discuss various matters with members of the local body, Mr. Syme outlined tbn position in regard to persistent foot-faultint; which he had encountered during the last tournament at Miramar. Not only was he severely criticised by the spectators for repeatedly foot-fault-ing a very prominent player, but even the latter was not of the opinion that he had erred. However, on it being explained to him he was very contrite and endeavoured to rectify it. This state of affairs was rather the order of the day than the exception and many were the harsh words which he had tci endure, but, undeterred, he continued to interpret the rules decisively and fearlessly. "That is what we as an umpiring association are determined to do. If a player does not adhere to the rules in every detail then he must be penalised no matter what result may eventuate," said Mr. Syme. "The tennis public is waiting to see just what is the attitude of the Auckland Association in . the forthcoming championships. Are you going to support the Wellington Association anj penalise offenders, no matter how infinitesimal is their offence, or are you goinp to become official scorers and no more?" inquired Mr. Syme. i Tha tiirre has come when we must act Us one body not only from our own point of view but also from the aspecv. of the players and spectators alike. The players, seeing that we are adamant in the strict application of the rules, wii.ll therefore make some effort to become conversant with them and consequently will assume a wider theoretical knowledge of the game." Speaking on behalf of the Auckland Umpires' Association, Mr. J. T. Harrison assured the visitor that every effort would be made to continue , the snlendid work which the Wellington Association had commenced so courageously and fearlessly. "The rules are set out clearly and distinctly in the hand-book and it is our duty to administer them in the correct manner." said Mr. Harrison. "That is what we are here to do and we shall do it to the very best of our ability."
