A RECORD JUMP

MISS HUNKO'S EFFORT MEETING HELD AT HAMILTON annual provincial relays * HOME TEAM WINS SHIELD [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON, Sunday A fast, hard track and keen competition in most events marked the annual Auckland Provincial relay and tennis' athletic carnival, which was held yesterday afternoon at Ilinemoa Park, Hamilton. The Hamilton Club, "with a strong, well-balance team in both running and field events, won the Kobn Shield, presented to the winners of the teams' championship, with 56 points. The Did Grammarians' Club, which won the championship last year at Auckland, was runner-up this year, scoring 36 points.

Good times were registered in many of the races, in spite of a hot sun and a lack of breeze. The 410 yards relay was won by Hamilton in the time of 44 4-ss, the Hamilton team also proving successful in the mile relay, which was run in 3m 31 3-ss, two seconds better than last year. !

A successful attempt on the official New Zealand ladies' broad jump record of 17ft. lOJin., which she established last year, was made by the Auckland athlete Miss Edna Munro. Miss Munro covered a distance of 18ft. 2Jin., three inches above her former record. In trials at the Auckland Domain recently Miss Munro jumped 18ft. 5 l-Bin., after which her exclusion from the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games created so much controversy. Hurdles Race Rerun Other good performances were registered in field events. G. Main, of Papakura, putted the shot 39ft. ljin., while in the senior hammer throw the three members of the Hamilton team won with a total distance of 315 ft. 9ins., compared with 253 ft. s|in. ; with which Old Grammarians were successful last year. The ladies' 360 yards hurdles race was rerun, owing to a protest concerning the placing of one of the hurdles. The former decision, which gave Otahuhu the victory, was not affected. The senior 440 yards relay, which was won by Hamilton, was robbed of some of its interest when A. Brown, of Old Grammarians, dropped his baton at the commencement of thp race, this accident placing his team in a hopeless position. A feature of the junior sprint events was the running of G. W. Soper for Hamilton. He displayed a fine turn of speed combined with an attractive style. A grand parade of all competing teams, headed by their club banners, preceded the events.
