WATERSIDERS' PICNIC

LARGE CROWD AT MOTUIHI WHARVES IDLE YESTERDAY Auckland wharves wero idle yesterday on account of the annual picnic of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union, which was held at Motuihi. The Auckland Harbour Board offices were also closed, and members of the board's staff attended a picnic at Pine Island. As in previous years, a very large crowd> attended the watersiders' picnic, the journey to and from the island being made by excursion steamers. Children and adults participated in a comprehensive sports programme, while swimming and sun-bathing was enjoyed by the great majority. Between 800 and 1000 persons attended the Harbour Board employees' picnic. Here, also, a varied sports programme proved very popular, the chief event being a tug-of-war between various departments. The winning team was drawn from the traffic staff.
