LEADMINING ACTIVE
AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY PEACE-TIME DEVELOPMENT Contrary to the general belief, the lead-mining industry is not materially affected by activity in armaments production, said Mr. D. Yates, general superintendent to the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary, Limited, of Port Pirie. upon his arrival from Sydney by the Awatea yesterday. On the contrary, he said, peace-time development in the building and allied trades had an immediate effect upon the industry with which he was connected.
"The old nursery rhyme which told us that bullets were made of lead has given place to the fact that they are made of steel," Mr. Yates sai<l. "and in Australia we smelter thousands of tons of lead to be used in*paint-makine and the manufacture of sheet lead, pipe and cable sheeting, and similar products."
Mr. Yates added that the lead-mining industry, like many other secondary industries in Australia, was in a flourishing condition and the prospects of continuing prosperity seemed excellent.
