JUNIOR SWIMMING
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS COMPETITION FOR SHIELD [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NELSON, Monday The second night's events in the New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships created an interesting position in the competition for the War Memorial Shield. The points are: —Auckland, three; Otaco, three; Southland, three; Bay of Plenty, three; Wellington, two; Canterbury, one.
Nettleton had a slight advantage over Mason all the way in the 100 yards junior boys' freestyle, the Auckland representative thus completing the double at the championships. Nani Kira, Bay of Plenty, and M. Stewart, Otago, had an exciting duel in the 50 yards junior girls, the brilliant Maori swimmer winning by a touch, 1 3-os within standard [time. Nani Kira takes the title from her elder sister, Nawi Kira, who won it at Hamilton two years ago.
The 100 yards intermediate backstroke created great interest 011 account of Miss J. Macdonnld, Southland, the Now Zealand representative at tho Empire Games, being a competitor. She won the event in lm 18 4-ss, only one second outside her New Zealand record, but met a worthy opponent in I. Mitchell, 13ay of Plenty, who is a robust swimmer and held 011 to the finish only five feet away for second place. *
Improving by 17 seconds 011 his time in the heats J. Cameron, Southland, took tho 440 yards intermediate event in 5m 41 l-5s from R. Marshall, Canterbury by nine yards.
