HEALTH OF PUPILS

SCHOOLS IN FEBRUARY HOT WEATHER SYLLABUS OUT-DOOR ACTIVITIES Experiments in adapting the school curriculum to the hot weather; usually experienced in February are recommended in a circular issued to the authorities of primary and secondary schools by the Director of Education, Mr. N. T. Lambourne. Teachers are encouraged to regard the ordinary time-table as being suspended during February, with the exception that the customary times for thfc daily opening and closing of school will be observed. In the arrangement of the modified curriculum, the health of the pupils is to be the primary consideration. To avoid the harmful effects of concentrated mental effort in the over-heated and enervating atmosphere of indoor classrooms, special activities which can be pursued largely in the open air are suggested. Among those recommended are swimming, home nursing, instruction in precautions for road-safetv, nature rambles, visits to places of interest, games and individual hobbies. In preparation for this out-of-door programme, the circular states, several schools have already made provision for the use of camp stools by the senior pupils.
