STOCK SALES

WESTFIELD QUOTATIONS * EASING IN DAIRY PRICES BONER CATTLE IN DEMAND A duller tone prevailed at the Westfield stock sale yesterday and as a' result values were not up to the previous week's rates. RYEGRASS AND MAIZE GISBORNE BUYING ACTIVITY [by telegraph—own correspondent] GISBORNE, Thursday A flutter of buying in ryegrass seed direct from threshing mills has been noticed in the Gisborne district during the past few days, and an improvement has been noticed in the inquiry for maize in Auckland. The sudden demand for ryegrass seed has been for bush burn mixtures in what has been mainly farmer to farmer sales.. From 9s to 10s a bushel of fanners' dressed seed has been paid for certified seed. Very little uncertified seed is on the market yet, but sales have been recorded from 7s to 7s 6d and even as high as 8s a bushel. A little business has taken place in maize recently and inquiries are being made from Auckland for prompt and forward delivery. Outside buyers are offering from 6s 3d to 5s 4d for prompt delivery, but inquiry is not for forward delivery and there is little indication of values yet. Practically the whole of the* past season's crop has to be sold before th«» new crop is available next spring. The new maize crops havfe made excellent progress and are thriving in the hot, dry conditions, with the exception, perhaps, of one or two of the late sown lines that had not been established well before the commencement of the dry spell. Crops generally have the best appearance for some years, being a healthy, dark green and with an excellent growtlj. Some of th,e crops already have reached the flowering stage, ■ . , f
