THEFT OF WATCHES
JCdURT GRANTS PROBATION .YOUTH'S NAME SUPPRESSED Nine charges involving the theft of 10 wristlet watches valued at £37 10s 6d from city jewellery shops were brought against a youth aged 17 in the Police Court yesterday. The magistrate, Mr. W. 11. McKean, ordered the youth's name to be suppressed. Mr. Moody appeared for accused. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that the youth had called at a shop on December 22 and had asked to sde a number of wristlet watches. When the assistant's back was turned he had stolen two. Apparently finding the theft easy to accomplish he had subsequently visited other shops and had committed further thefts. Ultimately he. had been caught in the act. Tho watches had been pawned and £3 5s 6d was owing to pawnbrokers. In asking for probation, Mr. Moody ■aid that accused appeared to have been seized with an enlarged idea of his own importance and needed the guiding hand of the probation officer. It was possible that he had been influenced by certain characters in films, of which he had seeri a large number.
The magistrate admitted the youth to probation for two years and ordered him to make restitution of the money owing. CASE AGAINST LABOURER AN INCIDENT AT CHRISTMAS A charge of stealing a watch valued at £l2, the property of Charles O'Neill, was preferred against Frederick Allen Little, labourer, aged 21, who appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that on December 25 Little and O'Neill mot in the latter's room, white some beer was consumed. Subsequently O'Neill went to sleep and accused took his Watch, which he pawned for £l. Accused said he had had a good many drinks on Christmas Eve and was very much under tho influence of liquor when he took the watch. He admitted to the magistrate that he was not drunk, however, when he subsequently pawned tho watch.
Accused was admitted to probation for three months and was ordered to make restitution of tho £l."
