LAND DEVELOPMENT

AREA NEAR NGATEA CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD [BT TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] NGATEA, Wednesday The opening of a large area of land between Ngatea and the foothills is likely at no distant date. The Lands Drainage Department has for some years been draining this area into the Maukoro Canal and the land is • now in good condition. The Government estimates included £3OOO for forming and metalling the Orchard West Road, which runs through the centre of the block from Ngatea to the Torehape-Waitakaruru Road. The Hauraki Plains County Council will not contribute anvthing toward this work, but it was advised to-day that a camp had been established and a commencement made on the road, which will serve approximately 4000 acres. The road, when continued toward Mangatarata, will give a short cut to Auckland.

The council decided to pay into tho public account £SOO toward the cost of the Torehape West road on the hill portion of the county.
