NATIONAL CARNIVAL AUCKLAND WINS THE SHIELD ANOTHER RECORD FOR NEWELL [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday Two more championships were gained for Auckland at the national senior swimming championship meeting, which was concluded to-night, through the success of Miss Mona Levdon in the 200 metres backstroke and that of a team of five sprinters in the 500 yards flying squadron relay. Auckland regained the Yaldhurst Shield from Otago with a score of G2 points. A New Zealand record was made b.v L. Newell (Canterbury) in the 440 yards free style, his time being 5m 10 2-ss. He won his third title and third record at tho meeting in this event. It was anticipated that tho chief contest would bo between Newell and tho Aucklander, P. Hanan, holder of tho 100 yards and 220 yards titles. However, although Hanan swam level with Newell from approximately tho end of the second lap to the end of tho sixth, that is, 200 yards, he could not stand the pace, and Newell rapidly left him behind. Finally, having lost second position to his team-mate, A. Pascoe, and D. H. Svmes (Canterbury), Hanan retired at 400 yards. Pascoe held off Symcs to be second. Newell had 21 yards to spare at tho finish. His time was one second faster than the national record he established at Christchurch last month. A Thrilling Finish Another title-holder was undefeated when Miss Sylvia Gotlieb (Wellington) retained tho 100 yards ladies' free style championship in a thrilling finish with Miss Islay Purdie (Otago). Miss Gotlieb went to the front from the plunge and at tho second lap, 67 yards, had a lead of three yards from Miss Purdie. Over tho last lap Miss Gotlieb tired greatly, and Miss Purdie, who had been continually impeding herself with an erratic course, quickly recovered lost ground. Nevertheless, Miss Gotlieb clung doggedly to the advantage and won by half a yard. A strong finish was also made by tho Aucklander Miss Violet Coulthurst, who came up well over the last lap for third place, halt a yard behind Miss Purdie. A contestant in tho race was Miss Kathleen Grey, the 16-year-old holder of the Auckland senior and intermediate sprint championships, ' who was being given a further trial for the British Empire Games and was, therefore, not an aspirant for the national championship. She was in second position a yard behind Miss Gotlieb at the end of the first lap, but after that dropped toward the rear of the field and finished last, at least five yards behind the winner. She hardly showed her best form, but had no chance of being first. Miss Leydon's Success Miss Mona Leydon was the winner of most titles. Her fourth success was in the 200 metres ladies' backstroke, in which she was the only starter. She swam casually and her time was nine seconds outside Miss M. Farquhar's record, 3m 23 4-ss. She has scored 20 of Auckland's shield points. Too many infringements by members of the Auckland team, such as swimming over their opponents, was tho principal cause of its defeat by Otago by 4 to 1 in the polo match. The Auckland team in the flying squadron race was Crump, Hanan, Frankham, Pasco© and Mathieson. Results in Detail Following are the results: — 440 Yds. Men.—L. Newell (Canterbury), 1: A. W.
