AN ALPINE WALK

MOUNT EGMONT LORD GALWAY'S INTEREST NATIONAL IMPORTANCE [bt telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday ■ Suggestions for having an early commencement made on the establishment of an alpine walk on Mount Egmont as a centenary gesture for Taranaki are contained in a letter received at Stratford from the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, who has sponsored the plan. "1 would suggest that a designing and planning committee and a botani-. cal committee be formed," said Lord Galway. "The first is now the most important." The first committee would survey the ground, in close touch with the Egmont National Park Board, to select the mo.st suitable places for clearing existing' scrub and getting the ground ready for planting next year. ]f the designing and planning committee could get something settled, then perhaps they could get volunteers to take over a piece of ground in accordance with the plan and do the clearance. In the meantime the botanical committee could get out plans of the most suitable plants to set in each locality. "Those are only suggestions," His Excellency continued, "but I do not think that any time should be lost." It was hoped the advice and help of experts outside as well as in Taranaki would be available, as the scheme was of national importance, a Stratford resident said. Eventually it was hoped to extend the scheme round Mount Egmont.
