GOVERNOR RESIGNS

SIR MURCHISON FLETCHER CONSIDERATIONS OF HEALTH (Received January 11, 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, Jan. 10 Sir Murchison Fletcher has resigned from his post as Governor of Trinidad and Tobago, British West Indies, on the grounds of ill health.* Sir Murchison Fletcher, who is 69 years old, was Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific from 1929 to 1936, when he was appointed Governor of Trinidad. He was succeeded in Fiji by the present Governor, Sir Arthur Richards. Soon after taking up his post in Trinidad Sir Murchison had to deal with serious labour troubles. An agita-

tion was started for higher wages for the workers in the oil, sugar and cocoa industries. When strikes occurred Sir Murchison appointed a committee to mediate, but the strike leaders ignored all overtures.

In June, 1937, large bodies of armed strikers raided villages, destroying property and firing on all who opposed them. A series of fights with the police occurred, during which 14 persons were killed and 44 wounded. In response to a wireless message from Sir Murchison the cruiser Exeter steamed .to the scene and landing parties helped the police to restore order.
