SOUND GALLOPS

HOKSES AT RICCABTON GREY HONOUR AND DICTATE EFFORT BY PAPER SLIPPER [by TELKGHAPH —OWN COlin KRI'OX dent] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Although there was a lot of rain at Jticcnrton during the week-end, the tracks, have dried up exceptionally Well and the No. 6 grass was good for galloping this morning. Most interest centred in the work of the horses with engagements at Trentham next week. Wild Chase and Nightdress, after running the first three in 37 2-ss, completed six furlongs in 1.16 1-5. Nightdress did not suffer by comparison with his mate and both will have friends at Trentham.

Lazybones and Mulatto were close company throughout flvo furlongs in 1.3 2-5. They h&d a rest after racing in November, but they are ready to show form next week.

Cerne Abbas, after going three furlongs in 37 4-ss, was joined by Ephod who assisted her to complete sjx furlongs in 1.16 1-5. Cerne' Abbas should be at her best for the Wellington Cup. Studley Royal, who will accompany Cerne Abbas to Trentham, went freely over six furlongs in 1.17. He has improved since he won at Hororata last month.

After showing plenty of speed over> the first three furlongs, Haughty Winner and Great Memory were going comfortably at the end of six furlongs in 1.18. Great Memory, will be allowed to miss Trentham, where Haughty Winner will race on the second and third days. Smart Half-mile Paper Slipper showed that he is in good form by running half-a-milo in 49 3-ss. Convivial, a candidate for the High-weight Handicaps at Trentham, ran six furlongs in 1.19 without being bustled.

Others to go comfortably over six furlongs before the breakfast interval were Defaulter, 1.20, and Mercenary, 1.22 2-5, who went separately. Sunbeam and Liberate took 1.21 3-5.

Argentic held Rabble at the end of six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. Rabble should be improved by each gallop, as he had an easy time while his trainer was absent during the holidays.

Linguist occupied 1.17 for six furlongs, finishing comfortably after doing the first three in 37 2-ss. Grey Honour and Dictate were associated over five furlongs in 1.1 2-5. Grey Honour showed more brilliance than his mate from the jump-off, but Dictate was never far away, and there was not much between them at the end of a very good gallop. Both are liable to be dangerous at Trentham. Raeburn and Rebellion were on even terms throughout three furlongs run in 37 2-os. Roy Bun did strong pacework and Dracula was not hurried over half-a-mile.

Top Rank was schooled over four hurdles. It was his first trial over the brush fences and, after going slowly at the start, finished in very smart fashion. Team for Trentham The Riccarton horses who are to race at next week's meeting will leave for Trentham on Friday night. There will be about 20 of them. H. and A. Cutts will have a team of six, consisting of Wild Chase, Nightdress, Paper Slipper, Haughty Winner, Lazybones and Mulatto. Trench Fight and Great Memory will remain at home. D. Cotton has cancelled the Trentham trip of Top Coat, who is lame, and has been stopped in his work. It is feared that his racing career may be Hearing an end. A. h. Ellis is to ride Argentic-in the Wellington Cup, J. W. Jennings will be on Wild Chase, and L. J. Ellis will steer Cerne Abbas.

As D. O'Connor will be at Trentham with the two-year-old Raeburn, he has sent Dollar Prince to J. Ross, and the Oamaru trainer will look after the gelding at the Vincent meeting on Friday and Saturday. Royal Chief, who was not seen at his best at Auckland owing to soreness, has made a good recovery since he returned home. He is doing only light exercise and no serious work will be required of him for a few weeks, after which F. D. Jones hopes to get him ready for the autumn racing at Trentham and Ellerslie, where it is hoped he will be able to show his true form in the St. Legers.
