THE EMPIRE GAMES

CANADIAN ATHLETES PROGRAMME OF TRAINING SUTHERLAND'S HAMMER THROW MARATHON RUNNER'S SCHEDULE Practically every member of tho Canadian Empire Games team took advantage of the excellent weather yesterday for a period of thorough training, and most of the party managed to got through a fair amount of sightseeing in addition. Altogether, Auckland had given the tourists the best work-out they had had since leaving Canada, said the team's treasurer, Mr. .T. H. Crocker, before tho party left by tho Aorangi for Sydney last night. All had thoroughly enjoyed their stay in Auckland. Tho biggest section in the party, tho track and field athletes, again visited tho Domain for running and jumping, hurdling and field events. Tho Domain ground greatly took tho fancy of tho visitors, who liked particularly tho springy nature of the ground. Tho hammer-thrower, G. Sutherland, struck form and made, one throw of 162 ft., while the other members were generally appreciative of the chance to loosen their muscles under proper conditions. Possibly the keenest member of the team is one of-the marathon runners, who was up at 4.30 o'clock yesterday morning and ran along the waterfront road to Orakei, thence through Remuera. round Mount Wellington and back to the city, a distance-he estimated at over 20 miles. Tho advantage was, ho explained, that ho thus had his training done by breakfast and could spend the remainder of tho day seeing tho sights of the city. This runner in tho three weeks since leaving Vancouver has covered 270 miles on board the Aarongi—22oo times round tho dock. Water too Shallow Swimmers and divers in the party visited tho Parnell baths in tho morning and tho Tepid baths in the afternoon. Although tho swimmers enjoyed full relaxation, the divers wcro handicapped by the shallowness of tho baths. ,At least 10ft. of water was necessary for a good practice, explained tho coach, Mr. T. Walker,, and he could not understand why Auckland baths were not deeper. Bowlers again attended the Auckland Club's green, where they were defeated by a strong Auckland rink by 20 to 15. The fast nature of tho green puzzled tho visitors, as it did the previous day, but, considering tho bowlers in the party had not played since September, they did well. Tho cyclists had a thorough practice at the Western Spring Stadium, while one of the road riders conducted a sight-seeing tour of his own, riding for an estimated distance of 75 miles through the city and suburbs. Rest lor Oarsmen Both wrestlers and boxers had a work-out in the Auckland gymnasium, assisted bj r local talent. Only the oarsmen had a rest. In their practice in one of the Auckland Club's boats on Monday the rowers' hands suffered and it was thought advisable not to row again yesterday, especially as, with the port stroking used in New Zealand rowing, the Canadian team, used to starboard stroking, had to alter their positions in the boat. DOMINION BOWLERS DEPARTURE FOR SYDNEY PLAY IN TWO TOURNAMENTS Thirty-seven bowlers from the North Island left for Sydney by tho Aorangi last night to take part in the Centenary Carnival which starts on Monday. New Zealand's representatives in the Empire Games contests will be picked from tho fujl New Zealand partv after the carnival games. Mr. A. h. Whitten will be manager and Mr. T. Petty co-manager.
