CHARGES OF FRAUD
ALLEGED PROMISE TO WOMAN MONEY FROM INVESTMENT [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday "This jjian persuaded an elderly woman to part with £l7, and was to have received another £33 from her to-morrow," declared DetectiveSergeant A. B. Meiklejohn in the Police Court this morning, when Truman Wiltshire, a labourer-clerk, aged 33, appeared on a charge of false pretences.
It was alleged that he obtained £l7 from Amy Ester Remnant on January 8 at Palmerston North by falsely representing that he was going to invest £SO for her, and that it would return her £4 weekly for 12 months. Mr. Meiklejohn said the accused had posed as having £SOO invested in a local betting syndicate, which was earning him £25 weekly. Wiltshire, who was also charged with forging a cheque for £ls at Ohakune on December 23 in the name of W. S. Baird, was remanded until Monday, pending further police inquiries.
