SECOND EDITION 100 KILLED
MADRID MYSTERY f. ■ GREAT EXPLOSION MANY HOUSES WRECKED NO COMMUNICATION By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 12, 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 11 A message from Paris says mystery surrounds reports from Valencia that a terrific explosion occurred in Madrid and wrecked eight blocks of houses. One hundred people were killed. Telephone communication between Madrid and Paris has been severed for some hours.' It is not known whether this is due to the explosion or an official vent news leaking out.
A despatch from Salamanca says the insurgents claim to be still holding out at Lamueja, an elevated post southwest of Teruel dominating the town. They also claim that they have not relinquished the suburb of Arjjabal. It appears that the Government forces dominate the heights to the north-west, but the warmer weather may mean that their possession will be short-lived. It is very likely that when the fate of Teruel is decided the town will be of little use to either sidej because it will be mostly pounded to ruins.
