GREAT WORLD FAIR
NEW YORK FIXTURE SPACE FOR NEW ZEALAND SIGNING OF CONTRACTS ? • (Received January 9, 6.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 8 The Australian Commissioner-Gen-eral, Mr. D. M. Dow, has signed a contract for Australia, and Mr. J. W. Collins has signed one for New Zealand, and the flags of the two Dominions have been hoisted, indicating their participation in the New York World Fair. Sir Louis Beale, who co-jointly signed a contract on behalf of the United Kingdom and certain Crown colonies, also was present at the raising of the Union Jack. All three expressed great satisfaction at the settlement of a difficult point. The United States Government had offered free to each participating
nation 10,000 feet of covered space on the ground level, but when more nations accepted than was expected, the authorities were embarrassed.^ They attempted to change the understanding and reduce the ground floor space to 5000 feet. Mr. Dow declined to accept the change until he received an assurance in writing that the same reduction would be applied to all nations. :> The compromise further included the provision that the three abovementioned British groups would receive 40,000 feet, of which 25,000 feet would be on ground level. It is not yet decided what participation Australia will make in the 100,000 feet of uncovered space, which Britain is taking and for which payment will be made. South Africa has not yet indicated its action regarding the fair. Canada will have its own pavilion.
