AMERICAN FEARS
FREEDOM OF PHILIPPINES OFFICIAL OPPOSITION GROWING WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 There is growing opposition in American official circles to the demand of President Quezon that the Philippines should be given their independ-. ence now. Japan's aggressive policy in the Far East is not the only reason for the opposition. The steadily-growing political arguments are reinforced by the United States Tariff Commission. The commission points out that the loss of preferential treatment which th? Philippines are receiving from the United States would seriously 1 injure the islands' economic structure. It even doubts the ability of the Philippines to assume the burderi of sovereignty by July, 1946, the date stipulated in the Independence Act. / The Tariff Commission's report will carry much weight ill the deliberations of Congress.
