After drinking petrol .from a small bottle, Ngaere Rosaline Geyde, the four-year-old daughter of Mr. D. A. Geyde, of Hastings, di«d yesterday afternoon. The child, with two a few years older, was playing abont the house, and entered a woodshed, where she found a small bottle con-. taining. benzine, which hei- father used 1 for replenishing his cigarette lighter. She swallowed a small quantity, which caused suffocation. At the inquest this afternoon a ; \ doctor said that death wag due to . acute heart failure,, secondary to pul? monary oedema, induced by the in- ( halation of petrol. .

"This is obviously an accident, and the circumstances are .very unusual," commented the coroner, Mr. 6< Ebbett, in returning a verdict of dental death. "It is difficult to 6ay that anyone could bo blamed for leaving the petrol where it was, for it was unlikely that anyone would think a child of that age would drink enough to do it any real harm. The circumstances are very unfortunate, and» |ws§ accident could happen in any Juras* , hold." •
