DESERTION FROM SHIP
• FIREMAN IMPRISONED A charge of deserting the steamer Rotorua at Auckland on December 15 was admitted in the Police Court yesterday by a ship's fireman, John Chester Maloney, aged 39. A representative of the shipping company said it was found necessary to fill accused's position when the ship reached l£- Wellington from Auckland. It would be sailing from Wellington on January 20, but it was doubtful whether work could now be found for accused, who was signed on in Liverpool. Sub-Inspector Fox said nothing was known against accused, but it was to | be hoped he could get a ship. "Ship ;> deserters aro usually of an undesirable - class, iind we do not want them hero," added Mr, Fox. "You must realise the inconvenience ! and trouble you have caused everybody ; by your action .in leaving the ship," : said tha magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, p; in sentencing accused to 14 days' imm proonraent. MR
