GENERAL RAIN LIKELY WARM TEMPERATURES The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —A deep and extensive depression is approaching across the Tasinan Sea, pressure having fallen considerably to-day in the far south. The forecast is for northerly to northwesterly winds, later backing to west and in the southern portion of the South Island temporarily to southwesterly, light to moderate at first over the northern half of the North Island, otherwise moderate to strong and of gale force at many places, south of New Plymouth and Napier. Seas rough to high in Foveaux Strait and rough about Cook Strait, moderate to rather rough and rising on the west coast of the South Island, elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern TaKinnn Sea: Moderate but freshening northerly winds in the northern portion with nipdnrnte but increasing seas, and strong north-west to westerly winds to gales in the central and southern portion, later backing in places to south-westerly with rough seas. The weather is likely to be cloudy to overcast with much mist or fog in places and fairly general rain developing, with some heavy falls in the western and southern districts of the South Island and thunder probable in places. Temperatures warm but later becoming cooler in the south. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST

I CLOUDY WITH RAIN COMING The Government meteorologist issued to the Hkrat.d last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province:—Light to moderate but freshening northerly winds. Tho weather is likely to be cloudy to overcast and in places misty, with rain gradually developing. Temperatures warm. Seas slight to moderate but later rising on the west coast. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland.—Fine, clear weather with a moderate to fresh northerly wind prcvailed during tho day, the maximum temperature being 80 degrees and tho minimum 70 degrees. Last night was dull and threatening with a freshening wind. Barometric pressure fell slightly in tho afternoon but steadied. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29.861n. Midnight, Monday . .. 29.99 in. Wellington.—Overcast, warm and humid weather prevailed, with a moderate to strong squally north-westerly wind. The minimum temperature on Monday night was 60 degrees and the maximum yesterday 73.8 degrees. The barometer registered 2y.75in. at 3.30 p.m. Christchurch.—The weather was overcast and oppressively hot. The maximum temperature was 84 degrees. The barometer fell sharply to 29.60 in. at 5 p.m. A light north-west wind blew throughout the day. Dunedin.—The sky was overcast and barometric pressure was unusually low, hut the day was very hot. The maximum temperature was 87 degrees. In the morning there was a gusty wind from the north-west, but this changed to a light north-easterly early in the evening. The temperature at 6.30 p.m. was 77 degrees and the barometer fell to 29.45iu.
