MARAETAI GATHERING VARIETY OF COMPETITIONS AQUATIC AND LAND RACING j | . Ideal weather, large entries and successful organisation marked the fifth annual regatta and sports meeting of the Maraetai Improvement Association, held at that popular resort yesterday. The 4 ever-ready assistance of Mr. J. McKinnon in allowing his auxiliary scow Rahiri to be used as flagship," and in towing several boats over from Waiheke, materially assisted toward the success of the carnival. Friends who were aboard with him also took charge of the sailing races, relieving the committee of this task.
Ashore, the committee ran off a big programme without a hitch. Keen finishes marked all the events, both afloat and ashore, much to the enjoyment of the large crowd which thronged the beach. SAILING EVENTS Three yacht races were held in the morning, with a good sailing breeze from the north-east. The course was from the flagship moored off the wharf to a mark off the powder magazine, thence up harbour to a mark ofT Maraetai Point, and back to the flagship. The small boats did one round only, while the N class made two circuits. Messrs. S. Clare and A. Couldrey were the handicappers, the time-keepers being Messrs. W. Couldrey nnd W. Clare. The -judge was Mr. W. Clare and the starter Mr. W. Couldrey. Results were:— 1 V Class, —Arline, Maramua and Limerick ! crossed nt gunfire in that order. On the run down wind to the finish Maramua challenged i Arline, which had the weather berth, but Arline got the gun by 37 seconds. The race started at llh 25m, the finish being timed:— Arline. 12h 41m 10s; Maramua, 12h 43m 335; Limerick, 12h 43m 13s. The result on corrected times was:—Limerick, 2tn, 1; Arline, scr, 2; Maramua, scr, 3. T and Y Class. —Five small boats faced the starter nnd crossed in the following order:—lnvader, Elenor, Mania, Ramona, Caprice. On the leg to windward Mania took the lead from Invader, and finished 41s seconds ahead. The race started at IJh 31m, and the finish was timed:—Mania, 12h 57m 9s; Invader, 12h 57m 50s; Elenor, 12h 60m '43s; Ramona, Ih 3m 335. Caprice withdrew. The result on corrected times was:— Elenor, fim, 1; Invader, lm, 2: Mania, scr, 3. Z Class.—The three little boats found it. hard work to hold up to windward against the outgoing tide, and they had to make a couple of boards to fetch the weather mark. Tho race stnrfed nt 11 h 38m, and the finish was timed:—Walmea. 12h 25m 335; Cheerio, 12h 29m 425; Nola 8., 12h 33m tts. The result on corrected times was:—Nola 8., 10m, 1; Cheerio, fim, 2; Waimea, scr, ft. Opon Dinghy Race.—H. McGregor and S. Clare, dead-heat, 1. Boys' Dinghy Race, under 18 years.—E. , McKinnon, 1; J. Boys Under 18 Years.—O. Ricknian, 1; B. Moys, 2. Neat Dive.—R. Boyce. l; Miss Hcaddy, 2. RUNNING EVENTS Married Men, fiOYds.—D. Moore, 1. Married Ludies, 50Yds.—Mrs. R. Strathdee, 1. Single Ladies, 75Yds.—Miss Burns, 1. Relay Race.—Miss R. Gallagher and A. Seagar. Men, IOOYds, Open.—First race; .7. Ferguson, 1. Socond race: C. Cook, 1. Tug-o-war.—Maraetai defeated Awaroa in one straight pull. The committee in charge of the meeting was:—President, Mr, H. Pollard; secretary. Mr. J. Wilson; committee, Messrs. A. Couldrey, A.
